Addi Lusk – Klosterman (2008 & 2011), Cruise Trollface & Space Time DVR – Wednesday 3/27

Section 1: Summary of Media

For “The Awe-Inspiring Beauty of Tom Cruise’s Shattered, Troll-like Face,” Chuck Klosterman examines the cultural obsession with celebrity appearances and how they are portrayed in media. He uses Tom Cruise as an example to explore the broader societal implications of idolizing physical perfection and the schadenfreude that accompanies the downfall of celebrities. Klosterman’s essay is a critique of the unrealistic standards set by Hollywood and the public’s reaction to celebrities who deviate from these expectations.

In “Space, Time, and DVR Mechanics,” Klosterman discusses the changing nature of sports viewership in the era of digital recording. He contemplates the reasons why watching a live sporting event feels more engaging than watching a recorded one. Klosterman suggests that the immediacy of live sports adds a level of excitement and authenticity that cannot be replicated by recordings. He also reflects on the impact of technology on the experience of being a sports fan and how it alters the perception of time and space.

Section 2: First Thoughts & Relations

My first thought, with the first source, was the videos, making fun of celebrities at the met gala for their absurd outfits in an attempt at “posh” fashion. These videos go against the norm of the extreme idolization of celebrities in today’s society, which, personally I do not fully understand. Celebrities or human beings just like me and you, and though they are famous for their specific career choice and their path, I don’t understand the infatuation that people have with celebrities as a whole.

My first thought, with the second source, was about the technology incorporated into sports viewership today. The engagement of live sports is really not all that significant in my perspective to watching a pre-recorded game other than the fact that you know the outcome of a pre-recorded game versus a live game. The technology incorporated into these games is leaps and bounds over what it was just over a decade ago. A specific example of this is ESPN sport science, which is a way to further engage viewers, but isn’t necessarily available during a live sporting event, versus a rerun of a previously aired sporting event, where they even have had the time to do said analyses.

I couldn’t find the specific video I was looking for that was about an in game example. But this video was familiar, and was something that I could personally relate to, since it was a comparison of softball and baseball.

Section 3: AI Research Conversation

Prompt: As an uninvested party, I wanted to get your insight on the cultural infatuation with celebrities and the significance of them as people versus other productive members of society, such as doctors, lawyers and teachers.

Response: The cultural fascination with celebrities can be attributed to various factors, including the human tendency to be drawn to individuals who have achieved a high level of success, visibility, and influence. Celebrities often represent ideals of talent, beauty, wealth, and glamour, which can be both aspirational and captivating for the public.

On the other hand, professionals like doctors, lawyers, and teachers play crucial roles in society by directly impacting the lives of individuals through healthcare, justice, and education. While they may not receive the same level of widespread adoration, their contributions are foundational to the functioning and advancement of communities.

The significance of any individual, whether a celebrity or a professional in another field, can vary greatly depending on cultural values, societal needs, and personal perspectives. Some may argue that the achievements of celebrities in entertainment, sports, or other fields can provide inspiration and a sense of connection for many people. Others might emphasize the tangible benefits that professionals in healthcare, law, and education provide, considering them to be of greater importance.

Ultimately, the value placed on different members of society is subjective and can reflect a wide array of social dynamics, including media influence, historical context, and individual priorities.

Prompt: So put simply, even though some members of society may be more productive for keeping society, afloat and functioning, the admiration from mainstream society is won over by celebrities because of their admirable lifestyles, and basically the jealousy of the primary society for those celebrities positions.

Response: Yes, that’s a concise way to put it. Celebrities often capture the public’s attention through their lifestyles and the glamour associated with their status, which can evoke feelings of admiration or envy. This can overshadow the recognition of professionals whose work is essential to society’s daily operations. The dynamics of cultural admiration are complex and influenced by many factors, including media portrayal, personal aspirations, and societal values.

Prompt: On a different note, what are the inclinations for people to watch live sporting events over recorded sporting events even though those recorded events may be more readily available versus live sports, being more engaging and entertaining?

Response:

People often prefer watching live sporting events over recorded ones for several reasons:

While recorded events offer convenience and comfort, they lack the immediacy and shared social experience that live events provide2.

Prompt: And so how does watching a live sporting event at home compare to seeing a live sporting event in person? Is it more personable to be at home with those you would know or more personable because you were actually at said event?

Response: Watching a live sporting event at home versus in person offers different experiences, each with its own advantages:

At Home:

In Person:

Whether it’s more personable to be at home or at the event can depend on personal preferences. At home, you might enjoy a more intimate viewing with friends and family. In contrast, being at the event allows you to be part of a larger community of fans, which can be a memorable experience. Ultimately, both settings offer a personable experience in their own ways.
